Not Just Another Dirty Magazine...

With articles like “The Lazy Girls Guide to Getting Gorgeous” and “5 Things Not to Do After a Breakup” how can I not pick up a copy of the latest Cosmopolitan Magazine.
Cosmopolitan magazine is an international magazine for women. Also known as Cosmo for short, cosmos current content includes articles on relationships, sex, health, fashion, beauty, self improvement, celebrities and real life stories. Cosmopolitan magazine is one of the oldest magazines in the United States. It was first published in 1886 by Schicht & Field as a family magazine called The Cosmopolitan. However it is now owned by Hearts Publications. Today, Cosmopolitan is published in 58 international editions in 34 languages and is distributed in more than 100 countries.

Cosmopolitan has become a must read for young women everywhere. According to Cosmo's company history on the magazine's website, Cosmo also began to serve as "an agent for social change, encouraging women everywhere to go after what they want whether it be in the boardroom or the bedroom." This quote can also serves as Cosmos mission statement.

Cosmopolitan works hard at reaching out to their target audiences. Their featured articles such as "Cosmo's Guide to Red Hot Sex," "Cosmo Confessions: Hundreds of Absolutely Shameful, Scandalous and Sexy Real-Life Tales!" and "Turn on Your Man" appeals to young readers everywhere. The women that grace their covers are all strong female celebrities that we can connect to such as Jennifer Aniston, Zoe Saldana, and Mila Kunis among others.  While looking at their Media Kit on their website, their main target audience are college females, women 18+, educated young women, moms, career oriented women, and women in the 18-34, 35-49 age range. Cosmo has become part of our culture in a way that they have been referenced in movies such as “Legally Blonde”, television shows like “The O.C” and “Will & Grace”.

Not only does Cosmo talk about the latest fashion trends, celebrity break up and make ups, Cosmo also touches on real world stories from real people. Real stories are recounted in "Cosmo Confidential". In this section survivors recall their stories on their past situations; how they handled it and what we can do to prevent such things from happening to us. Cosmo also offers safety tips for risky or dangerous situations and hidden risks about almost any other situation. A section such as "Health Check", which has featured articles such as "Cosmo Gyno" and "Your Body", both have entertainment value and help women understand their bodies and even helps women recognize possible health problems. Cosmo also never forgets about the guys. They offer a regular feature such as “Guy Confessions” pages where guys share embarrassing or shameful stories about things that they have done.

Overall, Cosmopolitan is a great magazine. It’s informative, entertaining, fun, appealing to its readers and good for the soul. It’s provocative but not over the top racy, I think it’s just right.
